When something doesn’t feel quite right, you go with your gut feeling. And that is exactly what Marshun Spears did when her husband, Videll, recently woke up at 1 a.m. telling her he didn’t feel good and had chest pain. Living four minutes from Providence, she got him in the car and took him to the
hospital immediately.
“He wanted to take an aspirin and lay down, but I thought, no, we are going to the hospital,” she said.
Having expert care, close to home was critical in saving Videll’s life, as he was in the midst of an active, massive heart attack. His initial care in the Emergency Department and then later in the Cath Lab and ICU, were all driven by what Marshun calls “amazing” nurses and doctors.
“When he was first in the ER, the nurses and then the ER physician, immediately assessed and began taking steps to save my husband’s life,” Marshun said. “I want to thank team members Kathleen Hitchcock-Brackney, RN, Kshitiz Chaudhari, RN, and Krystin Barnard, LPN, Dana Collins, CNA, Jennifer Easley, CNA, and Naomi Coffey, CNA, for their help with my husband. The team members were good communicators and let me know everything was being done for him while at the same time helping him remain calm.”
Marshun said, “Everything happened so quickly. These ER nurses were simply amazing.”
In addition, the Cardiac Center and ICU teams were very kind to him and later encouraged him in his recovery, Marshun added.
The couple reside in western Kansas City, Kansas, and have two grown children and seven grandchildren and have been married 26 years. Marshun is a prep cook at Providence and Videll works as a forklift driver at Legacy Supply Chain.
“Videll is never sick, so him being this ill was really a surprise,” Marshun said.
In case of an emergency, call 911. It can save a life.
