Providence Medical Center today announced that it has achieved the Healthgrades 2020 America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award™. The distinction places Providence in the top 5 percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.
Karen Orr, RN, MSN, MBA, CMSRN, CEO Providence Medical Center, credits the staff and physicians. “We are proud to receive this recognition for the past three years,” she said “This recognition reflects our strong systems in place to assure our patients at Providence receive high quality care.
Orr added that Providence is one of three America’s 250 Best Hospital recipients in the Kansas City area and one of two in Kansas City, Kan.
“Hospital quality varies significantly from hospital to hospital, so it’s important for consumers to do their research and select a hospital that provides the best level of care for their specific needs,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “We congratulate the recipients of Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award for their commitment to improving clinical outcomes for patients.”
From 2016 through 2018, patients treated in hospitals achieving the award had, on average, a 26.6 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome. *
And during that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award, 161,930 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated for Sepsis in hospitals achieving the award have, on average, a 25.5 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*
Providence Medical Center was also recently recognized by Healthgrades for top 5% in the nation for Critical Care (2020); Overall GI Services (3 years in a row); Overall Orthopedic Services (2020-2 years in a row); and Patient Safety (2017-2019). New awards for Providence in 2020 include being the recipient of the Health grades 2020 Stroke Care Excellence Award; being named among the top 10” % in the nation for Treatment of Stroke (2020); and Five-Star recipient for the Treatment of Stroke (2020).
Providence also received Five-Star recognition in Spinal Fusion (14 years in a row), Hip Fracture Treatment (4 years in a row); Treatment of Pneumonia (4 years in a row); Pacemaker Procedures (3 years in a row); Treatment of GI Bleed(3 years in a row); Treatment of Bowel Obstruction (3 years in a row); Treatment of Pancreatitis (4 Years in a row); Gallbladder Removal Surgery (5 years in a row); Treatment of Sepsis (5 years in a row); Esophageal/Stomach Surgeries (2 years in a row); and Carotid Surgery (2 years in a row). The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.
Recipients of the Healthgrades America’s 250 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2020 study period (2016 through 2018), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures — as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
