Thanks to quick thinking and sharp observation, Terion Altomari, LPN, a staff nurse on the 6th floor, saved the life of a Providence employee, according to Prashanth Katrapati, MD, interventional cardiologist.
The patient, who had recently undergone abdominal surgery, was preparing to be discharged when he reported upper stomach and chest pain. “Rather than assuming it was postoperative discomfort or GERD, Terion wisely ordered an EKG,” Dr. Katrapati said.
The Cath Lab team responded swiftly, treating the patient’s STEMI—a severe heart attack caused by a fully blocked coronary artery. Dr. Katrapati credited Terion’s attention to detail for the lifesaving intervention.
What began as a routine discharge turned into a life-threatening emergency for Michael Van Lis, Prime Healthcare Regional Supply Chain Director. While tying his shoes, he experienced a strong, pulsating chest pain. Terion acted immediately, securing help, and Michael was rushed to the Cath Lab, where Dr. Katrapati inserted two stents into his heart.
“I urge others to pay attention to any kind of chest pain,” Michael said. “It’s crucial to discuss any changes in your body with your doctor.”
Despite a family history of heart disease—both parents having died from heart attacks—Michael had never considered himself at risk. He now emphasizes the importance of CPR training, having performed it on four people, including his mother.
He expressed deep gratitude, saying, “I want to thank Terion, the Cardiac team, Dr. Katrapati, the ICU staff, and my surgeon, Cole McEwen, MD. They were all incredible.”
Hospital leaders recognized Terion with a Great Catch award and Michael is enrolled in the hospital’s Cardiac Rehab program and is doing well.
Dr. Katrapati added, “Despite a busy shift, Terion went above and beyond. This recognition is well deserved.”
