thumbnailProvidence Medical Center released today that it has been recognized by Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best hospitals for coronary intervention care and a 5 star recipient for treatment of heart attack for 2015. Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions in order to find the right doctor, the right hospital and the right care, evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 33 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions and identified the 100 best performing hospitals within each procedure.

The achievement is part of findings released online and in the Healthgrades 2015 Report to the Nation, which demonstrates how clinical performance differs dramatically between hospitals and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes and organizational costs. For example, from 2011-2013, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average 228,426 lives could potentially have been saved and 169,298 complications could potentially have been avoided.*

“Providence Medical Center has an incredibly talented and dedicated staff. I would put the expertise and level of care our patients receive at Providence up against the best in the region,” said Randy Nyp, CEO of Providence Medical Center. “Being recognized as a Top 100 Hospital in Coronary Intervention by Healthgrades confirms that our doctors and nurses, working in close cooperation with local EMT providers, are the best at what they do. Saving lives every day.”

“We have taken a team approach in providing comprehensive, advanced care for cardiac, arterial and venous disease,” said Venkat Pasnoori, M.D., board-certified cardiologist and Medical Director of the Cardiac Center. “We are deeply appreciative of this national recognition that is a reflection of our commitment to provide the highest level of care possible for our patients.”

Pasnoori pointed to the following hospital initiatives in helping Providence reach this quality achievement:

  • Initiating a collaborative effort with the Emergency Department & Cardiovascular nursing units to track and advance Cardiac Care.
  • The use of the radial artery in the wrist to perform diagnostic and interventional procedures, including coronary angioplasty and stenting, for almost 90 percent of their patients. This technique can reduce the risk of complications significantly and speed recovery.”
  • Development of a strong relationship with area EMT providers in Wyandotte and Leavenworth counties to identify early heart attack victims in the field
  • Achieving multiple national accreditations, such as the Gold Standard from the Society of Chest Pain Centers and the Platinum Performance for the Mission Lifeline Stemi recognition from the American Heart Association.
  • Providing minimally invasive techniques to repair holes in the heart.
  • Focus on community education with community organizations, HOA HeartSafe ,area businesses, churches and schools

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 40 million Medicare-patient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to each of 33 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically better than expected), 3-star (statistically as expected) and 1-star (statistically worse than expected) categories. Detailed performance information, such as cohort-specific outcomes data and quality achievements, as well as more information on the Healthgrades 2015 Report to the Nation, including the complete methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.
