Providence Medical Center has been named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ for General Surgery (4 years in a row), Gastrointestinal Care (3 years in a row), Orthopedic Surgery (3 years in a row) and Critical Care (2 years in a row) according to a national study by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states.

Karen Orr, RN, MSN, MBA, CMSRN, CEO Providence Medical Center, credits the staff and physicians. “Our staff and physicians provide excellent care with great compassion to people in our community,” she said. “This recognition is reflective of the high quality of care all patients receive every day here at Providence—expert care, close to home.”

“As consumers navigate their health, it is important to consider a number of factors, including hospital quality, before deciding where to access care,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. “Healthgrades’ America’s 100 Best Hospitals recognizes those hospitals that have proven their dedication to quality care and exceptional outcomes over time and we applaud their efforts and achievement.”

In addition to having been named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Critical Care, Gastrointestinal Care, General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery, Providence was recognized for the following clinical achievements:

Providence was recognized by Healthgrades for top 5% in the nation for Critical Care (2020); Overall GI Services (3 years in a row); Patient Safety (2017-2019); and Overall Orthopedic Services (2020-2 years in a row). New awards for Providence include being the recipient of the Healthgrades 2020 Stroke Care Excellence Award; being named among the top 10”% in the nation for Treatment of Stroke (2020); and Five-Star recipient for the Treatment of Stroke (2020).

Providence also received Five-Star recognition in Spinal Fusion (14 years in a row); Gallbladder Removal Surgery (5 years in a row); Treatment of Sepsis (5 years in a row); Hip Fracture Treatment (4 years in a row); Treatment of Pneumonia (4 years in a row); Treatment of Pancreatitis (4 Years in a row); Pacemaker Procedures (3 years in a row); Treatment of GI Bleed (3 years in a row); Treatment of Bowel Obstruction (3 years in a row); Esophageal/Stomach Surgeries (2 years in a row); and Carotid Surgery (2 years in a row). The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.

Variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. From 2016-2018, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, approximately 220,019 lives could potentially have been saved and 149,403 complications could potentially have been avoided.* A 5-star rating indicates that Providence’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
